Laser Hair Treatments – Autumn

Now that the fall season is in full swing, you may be thinking that covering up that unwanted hair of yours will be made a lot easier. Sure, it’s colder outside. And it’s only going to get colder as the weeks fly by. So long sleeved shirts, sweaters and jackets will be only-too-necessary requirements. If you have unwanted hair, the fall and winter seasons are the best ones to keep it covered up.

Or are they? While most people believe that the summer time is the most obvious choice for the time of year to remove their unwanted hair, some doctors think otherwise. Laser Hair Removal, as you are likely aware, is an excellent way to diminish the growth of hair in areas where you no longer wish it to grow. And the summer, of course, is the ideal time to show off your silky smoothness that comes as a result.

On RealSelf.com, however, Dr. Emily Altman suggests that the best time of year to undergo Laser Hair treatments is the time when you will be experiencing the least amount of sun exposure. You know – the fall and the winter time! This is because the laser treatment works best when the hair is dark and the skin is at its lightest. It’s all about heat absorption.

Explains Altman: “Laser hair treatments depend on the laser seeing the difference between the color of the hair and the color of the skin. The closer those are, the more difficult for the laser to tell the difference, and the more risk of complications. The recommendations are no sun exposure for 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after laser hair treatments. In addition, no self-tanner, as that will also affect the laser’s ability to see the hair follicle.”

Dark hair absorbs the most heat energy. So you’re actually doing yourself a favour by not exposing your skin to the sun and tanning it during the time you wish to have Laser Hair treatments. The darker your skin gets, the most heat energy it is likely to absorb from the laser. This will detract from the effectiveness of the laser treatment. Clearly, you don’t want that.

The fall and winter seasons also presents another great benefit to those looking to remove unwanted hair. By keeping your skin covered and protected from the cold, you are also allowing your skin the time to get to a completely hairless state before showing anyone the new and improved you. By the time summer rolls around again, you’ll be in your perfectly hairless condition!

Each Laser Hair Removal treatment is actually quite a quick and easy experience. See for yourself in this YouTube clip.

The treated areas are washed and cleaned before having numbing cream applied to them. Patients wear protective eye goggles as well. Depending on the size of the area being treated, a procedure can often take just a few minutes to be completed.

Patients notice hair loss even after a single Laser Hair Removal session. Over the course of the next several weeks, hair loss becomes more and more apparent. Often, a minimum of four to six treatments is recommended. But everyone is different, of course.
